What is the DFRS : Data for Road Safety ecosystem?

Significantly improving road safety in Europe for all road users requires the massive involvement of vehicle manufacturers, traffic information service providers, automotive suppliers and public authorities. This level of involvement is necessary to ensure the pace and critical mass of safety data required for comprehensive safety-related traffic information services.

DFRS is an evolving consortium that any industrial partner in the field of transport, mobility and traffic data, as well as public authorities, can join to exchange data and receive in return safety-related traffic information generated thanks to everyone's contributions.

What is DEEP's role?

DEEP plays a major role in the European Data For Road Safety consortium, which aims to significantly reduce the number of road deaths by 2050. Through its Data Intelligence platform, DEEP provides the technological basis for the real-time ingestion of all safety events generated by connected vehicles in Europe, in a secure manner that complies with legislation on the protection of personal data. Thanks to the data collected and the artificial intelligence algorithms developed by the Data Intelligence team, this tool enables partners to accurately receive various events such as accidents, traffic jams, adverse weather conditions, slippery roads and wrong-way vehicles, with a view to warning motorists in advance and, where necessary, supporting emergency response teams.

"The Data For Road Safety (DFRS) project, in which DEEP has been actively involved since 2019, is a good example of how data and its exploitation using cutting-edge technologies can address major societal challenges and save lives. To contribute to this goal, we have opened our Data Intelligence platform to the consortium and are contributing our knowledge of real-time data processing and data science to generate increasingly accurate and reliable safety events. DEEP extended the accessibility of its platform, making all the traffic safety data (SRTI) collected available to DFRS members and their Data Scientists in a collaborative development environment".

This platform, which has proved its worth in terms of performance and high availability, has recently been sponsored by Volvo Cars, which uses it to transfer all its safety-related data. Other European manufacturers and road operators have already expressed interest in contributing.

"Our commitment to the public interest, innovation and technology has led us to build and operate this crucial platform for the DFRS consortium, to harness data-driven information for a safer road future.

We provide the technological backbone that supports the convergence of data from multiple sources and produces relevant traffic information, enabling the consortium to harness the potential of Big Data analytics"s"
